RAT Fun Matchs: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fun match? A
fun match (fun run, show-n-go) is basically a practice trial
in which nothing counts towards titles, and there are no placements
or awards. Fun matches are a GREAT opportunity for novice handlers
and dogs to get some positive, trial experience before
jumping into the real thing.

Who may participate?
Unless specifically designated a "Members-Only" fun
match, RAT fun matches are open to the agility community. You
don't need to be a RAT member or be training with RAT to participate.

How much agility experience do I need?
Novice handlers and their
dogs should be familiar with all of the equipment, and should
have some experience with obstacle sequences. If you are still
working on weaves, or contact, or teeter performance, that's
OK, but please let the supervising person know if there
is something you need help with. We want you and your dog to
have a safe, positive experience!

Can junior handlers participate? Yes! Please note that since handlers under
18 need the signature of a parent or guardian, they do need to
be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Do I need to pre-register? No! Just show up! Be sure to check if
there is a specific check-in time for your level.

What should I bring?
Bring a crate or ex-pen, so you can leave your dog in a safe
and secure place, toys, treats, or whatever you use to reward
your dog, poop-bags, water and a bowl, a partner or spouse to
haul it all, and a happy, positive attitude!

How are fun matches organized? Once you arrive, check in, pay, and add
your dog's name to the sheet that lists dog running order. As
at a real trial, you will be called when your turn comes, but
please pay attention and be ready. You get a specified time on
the course for each run, typically 2 minutes.

Can I train on the course? Absolutely! This is a chance to work out
some of the "bugs" in your agility performance. Having
trouble on the teeter? Go ahead and help your dog achieve
success, and reinforce good performance with toys,
food or whatever makes your dog go! If you need help with something,
just ask. As a courtesy to others, please leave the course when
your time is up.

Can I bring treats, toys or a clicker onto
the course? Yes. If you
want to reinforce a specific behavior, go ahead! We may not,
however, allow some training aids such as weave pole wires that
require lots of set-up and take-down time.

Do I have to run the set courses? Not necessarily, but please check the
supervising person, the "judge" before you try something
different.
