Why do agility?

Agility is fun! Agility is a chance to get out have a good time with your canine companion and meet great people. Dogs have a great time doing agility, especially high energy dogs who "need a job".

Agility emphasizes personal improvement. Dog and handler teams set their own goals and work towards them a the their own pace. Agility participants can also earn titles at sanctioned trials by completing a required number of runs with fewer than the maximum allowable faults - irrespective of the performance of other teams. Many agility teams are continualy striving for a "clean run" - under time with no faults. Measure success against your own training goals, your level of enjoyment, and by the growth of your relationship with your dog.

Agility competition. In addition to working towards titles, teams at sanctioned trials compete with each other for placements and ribbons. Competition classes are divided into three levels: Novice, Advanced/Open, and Masters/Elite. Teams may compete in local trials and can advance to regional and national level competitions held by the various sanctioning organizations. Placements are determined first by faults, then by time.

Agility is also about people! Agility classes, fun matches, trials and club meetings are great places to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. Agility is run largely by volunteer effort. The best way to learn and have a good time is to get involved - join your local club and volunteer to help.
